Job Summary:
The Prieto Battery Lab Technician will primarily be responsible for electrodepositing anode materials, and coating those anodes with a polymer-based separator at the Prieto facility in Fort Collins using electrochemical techniques. The individual in this role will coat samples as needed for company goals and deadlines while also helping with the continued development and improvement of materials for lithium ion batteries. The technician will work under the direction and supervision of a senior scientist to fulfill duties and improve coatings or processes. The individual will be responsible for presenting findings and improvements at weekly meetings.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain chemical baths for anode and solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) depositions
- Electrodeposit anodes.
- Coat anodes with SPE for cell assembly.
- Clean laboratory apparatus. Prepare chemical solutions according to standard formulae.
- Characterize polymer coatings using gravimetric analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
- Perform polymer coating optimization – monomer/initiator/salt type and amount, deposition conditions, etc.
- Workup and analyze data for polymer optimization.
- Assist in the creation of solid polymer electrolyte design for company R&D projects.
- Critically think through lab issues/deposition problems.
- Keep R&D management team abreast of polymer coating development status, present recent findings at weekly meetings.
- Read and search literature for useful publications.
- Pouch and coin cell characterization as needed (EIS).
Required Qualifications:
- BS in Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Material Science or related area.
- 2+ years of laboratory experience – academic or industrial.
- Safe laboratory practices.
- Proficiency with wet chemistry techniques.
- Strong problem-solving capability.
- Ability to succeed with individual as well as team-based objectives.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous knowledge of impedance spectroscopy and EIS modeling.
- Proficiency with electrochemical methods for making and characterizing materials.
- Experience in battery development, design, or manufacturing.
- Experience in electroplating.
- Detail oriented.
- Not deterred by repetitive tasks.
- The employee is frequently required to sit, stand and walk and may occasionally carry, lift, and/or move up to 40 pounds.
